I wish someone would tell me, What it is that I've done wrong. Why do I have to stay chained up, And be left alone so long? They seemed glad to have me, When I came here as a pup. There were many things we'd do, When I was growing up. The master said he'd train me, As a companion and a friend. The mistress said she'd never fear, To be alone again. The children said they'd feed me, And brush me every day. They'd play with me and walk me, If only I could stay. But now the master "hasn't time," The mistress says I shed. She doesn't want me in the house, Not even to be fed. The children never walk me, They always say, "Not now." I wish that I could please them, Won't someone tell me how? All I had you see is love, I wish they would explain. Why they said they wanted mine, And left it on a chain? ...author unknown |
Adoption Notes from Dee...I am on the board of the Douglas County Humane Society and also volunteer at the Douglas County Animal Shelter providing them with behavior and temperament assessments on their adoptable dogs. I often foster homeless dogs and offer training discounts to local rescue groups.
Please take into consideration that dogs in shelters may often display undesirable behaviors because of the high stress environment. I have witnessed first hand that they can act totally different once they are in a comfortable home and have bonded with their new family. Many dogs in shelters have been in homes before, and may already be housebroken and know basic obedience commands. Though some dogs end up in shelters due to behavior problems, many of the dogs there are very well behaved and are given up for financial or other reasons. Please keep an open mind and an open heart when you consider adopting a shelter dog. There are many more dogs born in this world than people to adopt them, so please spay and neuter your pets!
